We are delighted to announce the International Joint Conference on Language, Society, and Culture (JCo-LSC 2026), which will be held at National Chiayi University in Chiayi, Taiwan, on September 12–13, 2026. Organized by the Department of Chinese Literature at National Chiayi University, JCo-LSC 2026 aims to provide an interdisciplinary forum for scholars, practitioners, teachers, and students to exchange ideas, share preliminary results, and discuss research findings on all aspects of language, society, and culture, as well as related fields, in a warm and welcoming environment.
我們很高興宣布，2026語言、社會與文化國際聯合學術研討會（JCo-LSC 2026）將於2026年9月12日至13日在臺灣嘉義國立嘉義大學舉行。本研討會由國立嘉義大學中國文學系暨研究所主辦，旨在提供一個跨領域學術交流平臺，讓學者、實務工作者、教師與學生能在友善開放的環境中交流觀點、分享初步研究成果，並討論語言、社會、文化及相關領域之研究議題。

Linguistic Landscape: Theory and Application
語言地景：理論與應用
The theme of JCo-LSC 2026 is “Linguistic Landscape: Theory and Application.” Linguistic landscapes serve both informational and symbolic functions, reflecting the power dynamics and social status of different linguistic communities within a given area. Beyond documenting visible language use in public spaces, this approach has developed into a highly interdisciplinary framework engaging with affect, art, embodiment, borderscapes, urban life, education, ethnic spaces, extreme environments, gender and sexuality, language learning, language policy, linguistic awareness, rights and activism, minority languages, memorialization, multilingualism, protest and dissent, rural contexts, war-affected spaces, and tourism.
JCo-LSC 2026以「語言地景：理論與應用」為主題。語言地景兼具資訊性與象徵性功能，能呈現特定區域中不同語言社群的權力關係與社會位置。此研究取徑不僅記錄公共空間中可見的語言使用，也已發展為高度跨領域的分析框架，涵蓋情感、藝術、身體性、邊境空間、都市生活、教育、族群空間、極端環境、性別與性、語言學習、語言政策、語言意識、權利與行動主義、少數語言、紀念空間、多語現象、抗議與異議、鄉村脈絡、戰爭影響空間及觀光等議題。

Panel 1: Taiwan’s Linguistic Landscape in Taiwan–Japan Comparative Perspective
論壇一：臺灣語言地景的臺日比較視野
This panel examines linguistic landscapes as visible expressions of multilingualism, language policy, and social meaning. It focuses on Taiwan’s unique sociolinguistic context, where Mandarin, Southern Min, Hakka, and other languages coexist and interact through layered written forms. By incorporating comparative perspectives from Japan and beyond, the panel aims to reassess existing theoretical frameworks and explore implications for language policy, education, and public discourse.
本論壇將語言地景視為多語現象、語言政策與社會意義的可見表現，聚焦於臺灣華語、閩南語、客語及其他語言交錯共存的社會語言脈絡。透過納入日本及其他地區的比較視野，本論壇旨在重新檢視既有理論框架，並探討其對語言政策、教育與公共論述之啟示。

This panel explores how Asian culinary spaces function as sites of linguistic, cultural, and symbolic exchange across global contexts. Drawing on linguistic landscape and multimodal approaches, it examines how language, design, and spatial practices shape identity, authenticity, and intercultural communication. Through case studies from Europe, North America, and North Africa, the panel highlights the role of food in cultural globalization and soft power.
本論壇探討亞洲飲食空間如何於全球脈絡中成為語言、文化與象徵交流之場域。論壇將結合語言地景與多模態研究取徑，考察語言、設計與空間實踐如何形塑身份認同、真實性想像與跨文化溝通。透過歐洲、北美與北非等地之案例，本論壇亦將揭示飲食文化於全球化進程與文化軟實力展現中所具有之關鍵意義。

Biology, Belief and Popular Culture: Rethinking Gender Essentialism

Abstract
This presentation examines how popular understandings of science are used to sustain essentialist ideas about gender and sexuality. It focuses on the ways biological explanations, including pseudoscientific claims, are circulated through media and everyday cultural narratives, giving social norms the appearance of natural truth. By analyzing the relationship between scientific authority and popular culture, the talk shows how gender roles and sexual norms are reproduced, legitimized, and made difficult to challenge. At the same time, it considers how critical engagement with both science and media can open space for more flexible, inclusive, and socially grounded understandings of gender and sexuality.

本演講探討大眾對科學的理解如何被用來維持關於性別與性的本質主義觀念。演講將聚焦於生物學解釋，包括偽科學論述，如何透過媒體與日常文化敘事流通，使社會規範被賦予自然真理的外觀。透過分析科學權威與大眾文化之間的關係，本演講說明性別角色與性規範如何被再生產、正當化，並因此變得難以挑戰。同時，本演講也將思考，如何透過對科學與媒體的批判性理解，開啟更具彈性、包容性，並立基於社會脈絡的性別與性理解。
Probing Multilingual Sources in a Seventeenth-Century Luzon Hokkien-Spanish Manuscript

Abstract
The paper aims at teasing out the multilingual sources of the seventeenth-century Hokkien-Spanish manuscript Philippine Chinese Manuscripts in the Herzog August Library (Lee et al., 2020), in conjunction with other manuscripts of the same period (Lee et al., 2019). The manuscript was intended as a manual for learning Spanish and indigenous languages in Luzon by the Sangleys from Hokkien. Hokkien sonographs are used to render Spanish and other local languages. The manuscript can be construed as a kind of field notes recording indigenized Spanish in Luzon. It consists of words and phrases, fragments of sentences, and even passages of short episodes.
Spanish assimilated Indian elements in New Spain in its navigation from Central America to Luzon, where it also incorporated indigenous and Malay elements that had existed prior to the colonial period. We can also infer, on the strength of the phonological adaptation of loanwords, that Sangleys most probably learned Spanish by interacting with local mestizos conversing in both Spanish and Hokkien rather than with Spaniards. The manuscript bears the imprint of an ecological situation underscored by the interaction among people with their own linguistic backgrounds in vibrant environs. There is a robust aspect of contact-induced changes in multifaceted Spanish through time and space.

本文旨在探查十七世紀呂宋閩南語—西班牙語手稿 Philippine Chinese Manuscripts in the Herzog August Library（Lee et al., 2020）中的多語來源，並與同一時期的其他手稿（Lee et al., 2019）相互參照。該手稿原為在呂宋的華人，即 Sangleys，透過閩南語學習西班牙語與當地原住民族語言的手冊。手稿以閩南語音字記錄西班牙語及其他地方語言，因此也可視為一種記錄呂宋在地化西班牙語的田野筆記。其內容包括詞語、短語、句子片段，甚至短篇敘事段落。
西班牙語自中美洲航行至呂宋的過程中，在新西班牙吸收了印第安語言成分；抵達呂宋後，又納入殖民以前即已存在的原住民族語言與馬來語成分。透過借詞的音韻適應現象，本文亦可推測，Sangleys 學習西班牙語的主要途徑，很可能不是直接與西班牙人互動，而是透過與同時使用西班牙語與閩南語的本地混血社群交流。此手稿呈現出一種語言生態情境的印記：不同語言背景的人群在活躍的環境中互動，並促成西班牙語在時間與空間中產生多面向的接觸性變化。

We welcome submissions that engage with, but are not limited to, linguistic landscape theory and methodology; multilingualism in public spaces; language policy and planning; identity, gender, and sexuality in linguistic landscapes; minority and endangered languages; urban and rural semiotics; digital and virtual landscapes; tourism and commercial signage; memorial and historical landscapes; protest, activism, and political discourse in public spaces; and interdisciplinary approaches connecting linguistic landscape studies with anthropology, sociology, education, cultural studies, and media studies.
本研討會歡迎與下列議題相關之投稿，包括但不限於：語言地景理論與方法、多語公共空間、語言政策與規劃、語言地景中的身份、性別與性、少數與瀕危語言、都市與鄉村符號學、數位與虛擬地景、觀光與商業招牌、紀念與歷史地景、公共空間中的抗議、行動主義與政治論述，以及連結語言地景研究與人類學、社會學、教育學、文化研究、媒體研究等領域之跨學科研究。

Submission Rules
投稿規則
Each author may submit up to two abstracts; however, only one submission may list the author as sole author or first author. Accepted submissions will be arranged as oral presentations. The official languages of the conference are English and Chinese. Each presentation is limited to 20 minutes, followed by 5 minutes for questions and discussion and 5 minutes for session transition.
每位作者至多得投稿兩篇摘要，惟其中僅一篇得為單一作者或第一作者之論文。經審查通過者，將安排口頭發表。大會正式語言為英文與中文，投稿者得擇一使用。每場發表以二十分鐘為限，另設五分鐘提問討論及五分鐘場次轉換時間。

Papers presented at this conference may be submitted, in accordance with the submission guidelines of each journal, to academic journals such as the NCYU Journal of Chinese Studies and the Wenzao Journal of Applied Chinese, and may be considered for publication upon passing the double-blind peer review process. 本研討會發表之論文，得依投稿規定送交《嘉大中文學報》、《文藻應華學報》等學術期刊，經雙匿名外審程序通過後刊登。相關細節將於會議期間另行公告。
